Will Nokia XpressMedia Compete with iPhone?
When I said that profits of the mobile phone manufacturers are shave-narrow, that was just what I meant. The new Nokia smartphone 5800 XpressMedia (aka Tube), perceived by many as Finnish iPhone-killer, will try to outsmart its famous American look-alike by offering the clients unlimited free downloads of their favourite MP3 music. Customers, Nokia and the large record producing companies are happy. Musicians are not. They will remain underpaid!
5800 XpressMedia Tube will be Nokia’s first smartphone with touch screen. The phone will have enhanced options for viewing video, downloading/uploading pictures from the Internet and support for Java (read Games, games, more mobile games).
It is expected that the Nokia Tube will appear on the shelves before the end of 2008. Its price is estimated to £130 + a 12 month contract and almost life-long binding to a Nokia contract. It is done to finance the free MP3 music download. Nokia’s new entertainment system will be a serious competitor to more expensive and less appealing iTunes by Apple’s iPhone.
It is estimated that Nokia will have very little income on its 5800 cell phone, however, when the prize is the world domination, all the weapons are good enough.
