Symbian Now Completely Owned by Nokia
filed in News & Stuff on Dec.03, 2008
December 2, 2008 saw Nokia completing the process of acquiring Symbian. Finnish mogul secured almost 100% of the Symbian shares that it did not already own. It remains unclear who was so stubborn to keep the 0.01% of Symbian shares.
This is a giant step towards the Symbian Foundation - the vision Nokia shares with Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, AT&T, Samsung and others. The fact that all shares are consolidated by one capable company will allow Symbian to evolve into a strong Open Source software community and prevent the concept from developing into separate branches.
The first job of Symbian Foundation will be to bring all Symbian sub-types (these are MOAP, Series 60 and UIQ) under one roof and give it a unifying direction.
This will put Android and other Open Source software communities under pressure. More pressure means better quality!
