ITN, the Independent Television News, team has caught a queue outside a T-Mobile dealer shop in Times Square, New York. Yesterday, a month after the official launch, the Google G1, aka HTC Dream phone, hit the shop shelves at last! The phone is sold via T-Mobile dealership in towns and cities where there is 3G coverage.

Although the majority of USA shops started selling G1 and taking the subscriptions (you gotta get a two-year contract together with your Google phone), San Fransisco defeated other cities by selling the phone at 6 in the evening Pacific Time as early as Tuesday. And no, these were not fake phones - it was an official T-Mobile dealership. More than 100 people were seen flocking at the San Francisco shop and allegedly everyone went home with a Google phone in their pockets. Must be a good feeling!

It is expected that the centres of Google G1 craze will be New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

These cities are enjoying a thorough 3G coverage, however, G1 will also provide Wi-Fi connection. GPS fully compatible with Google Maps will be a very enjoyable feature. It is expected that functionality will be one of the main benefits of using a G1. A touch-screen is nothing outrageous, but then there is a full qwerty keyboard, too. Apple iPhone will never be a qwerty cell phone (unless they develop a new model) but Google G1 incorporate both qwerty and touch-screen

Anticipation for the Google G1 phone is enormous. We shall see if this anticipation will actually translate into sales, popularity, fashion or even cult status. Feature-wise G1 phone is more flexible to claim the cult phone status from Apple iPhone. However, we should not forget that iPhone is selling at a pace of cheap hamburgers. Can Google and HTC collaboration hit the iPhone craze?
