Ah, don’t worry. Pantech is not trying to break into the roofing market. No, they are developing another qwerty cell phone for their lucrative collaboration with AT&T. The code name of the new device is Pantech Slate. It will be as cheap as slate and as thin as slate - hence the name.

It is not the first time on the roof for Pantech. They have had a successful qwerty cell phone model developed a year ago. Pantech Duo is in fact a very remarkable cell phone. Not only it has a slide-out qwerty keyboard but also another slide-out corded (aka numeric) keyboard. To house two separate slide-out keyboards, the phone needs to be really thick - almost an inch!

Pantech Slate will be just another story. It claims to be the thinnest qwerty cell phone on the market and still it will find a space for a  basic 1.3 Megapixel digital camera.

On a 2 year contract with AT&T, Pantech Slate will cost $49 and is estimated to be bang-on in the times of global credit crunch. We need cheap phone but we still need the cheap cell phones to be good. I mean really good - not as good as Blackberry but still, we don’t want the keys and screen falling apart. Pantech Slate will deliver good quality. There is no doubt about that. The company, based in Korea, was established in 1991 and has since worked with many notable cell phone carriers around the world.

One of the greatest achievements for the Korean company was probably the contract with a phone carrier in France. Do you know how difficult it is to please French people?

It is expected that Slate will boast most of the features seen on Pantech Duo plus some more. So we will have a fully functional Mobile Office, Windows Media Player for MP3 and videos, easy e-mail and instant messaging. And, yes, it will run Microsoft Mobile OS - crash-free and easy to grasp!

Design-wise the budget class Pantech seems to be quite nice. Those blue buttons look like gems. Maybe it won’t be the iPhone killer but still, such a nice phone!
