Palm Treo 680
Once upon a time there was a Palm Pilot – a handheld device meant for reading e-books, editing documents and managing tasks. Then it was paired with a mobile phone and there we had it. There are Palm Treo 600, 650, 680, 700p, 700w, 750, 800, Palm Treo Pro and Palm Centro. What is the difference? Which one will suit you?
Palm Treo 600 was the first attempt to launch a decent qwerty cell phone and it almost succeeded. Yet it was Treo 650 that really hit the ball. The 650 is a true world phone because it supports both GSM and CDMA networks while 680 only works with GSM. Still the latter als adds EDGE. Both phones are running on a Palm OS, however Treo 650 carries an older version.
Palm Treo 750p (755p), 600, 650, 680 and Centro will carry a Palm OS software. Although non-standard, you will be able to synchronize (connect with) your qwerty cell phone with both PC and Mackintoch computer. Whereas if you are using Treo 750, 700w, 800w or Palm Treo Pro, you will only connect to PC computers. This is where you have to make a decision whether you will need to access both PC and Mac or only PC.
All Palm Treo qwerty cell phones will come with a meagre free memory of either 60 or 100 Mb. This shouldn’t affect your decision because you will have to buy a MicroSD card either way!
If your pockets are relly small, choose Palm Centro – it is smaller and lighter than its Palm cousins.
Design
The 600, 650 and series 700 (not 750) have an antenna looking out of the cell phone case. Other models are smooth with an in-built antenna. Palm Centro is more fun and available in different colours but Palm Treo Pro looks strict and professional. It depends on your style!
What about multimedia?
All Palm qwerty cell phone models will be able to replace your MP3 or video player.
It is likely that you will find Palm Treo 700w and 750 to be doing a better job. They are both on Windows Mobile OS hence offering Windows Media player – currently there’s nothing better than that when it comes to MP3 or video play-back.
How to choose?
The secret of Palm Treo popularity is its diversity. Apart of its native Palm OS software it also offers similar Windows Mobile powered qwerty cell phone models. It is a great idea because they are likely to befriend two large cell phone addicts’ communities.
If you have been using one of these Operational Systems before, it would be advisable to stick with your preferrence. A familiar mobile environment proves to be less stressful and you will be having a better user experience.
If you’re switching from Symbian or a basic mobile phone and Treo is to become your first smartphone, better go with a Windows Mobile edition. A qwerty cell phone is ideal for editing and reading Microsoft Office document, so you will have a better functionality running these applications on a native OS.
Also check the network type of your provider. A Treo 680 will not work on a CDMA network.
Editor’s Choice
Either Treo 800w or Palm Treo Pro. They both have high-resolution screens, 2.0 Bluetooth support, enhanced processors, 2.0 Megapixel camera and GPS. They are running a fresh Windows Mobile 6.1 instead of version 5 on series 700. The only difference between Treo Pro and Treo 800 is GPS navigation quality, digital camera quality and the fact that Treo Pro is an international qwertyu cell phone with HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, GSM, UMTS and GPRS connectivity while 800 is only good in America and other places with CDMA / EvDO networks.
