The Most Recycled Phone. BlackBerry and iPhone?
Now that more than 50% of planet’s inhabitants have a cell phone or in most cases more than one, the recycling problem is becoming more and more serious. It is estimated that we reject around 130 million cell phones annually. Unfortunately, majority of these phones end up in a simple landfill.
According to ReCellular Phones List, the most recycled cell phone is Nokia 6010. For a full list visit the link. However, it is obvious that the list is dominated by Motorola and LG phones. Majority of the current rejects are produced between 2004 and 2006, which means that quite often people get rid of their old phones soon after the expiry of their 18-month contracts. It is unlikely that you can detect any popularity or fashion trends on this list. Maybe it is just a matter of awareness.
Nokia says that almost 50% of all old phones produced by company are still kept at customers’ homes. Another 27% are returned to the vendor or carrier once the phone is not needed any more. So what about the remaining 23% of cell phones? They are just kicked away, put into a bin and trashed into a landfill.
This is an alarming situation. A mobile phone consists of parts and elements that are extremely unfriendly to the environment. The biggest threat comes from a battery.
Soon we will come to a situation when the list of recycled phones will be topped by qwerty cell phones, iPhone and other smartphones. They are bigger and contain more dangerous stuff.
Actually it is very easy to get rid of an unwanted phone. You can either give it up to your vendor or go to ReCellular or other mobile sustainability companies to donate or even sell your unwanted gadget. You should never put your gadget in the general waste bin. It is dangerous!
