Microsoft to Compete with its Branded Smartphone. Is it too Late?
There was a time when Microsoft was on the avant guard of the technology wave. That time has passed. It is still a force worth considering but since the advance of Google, it seems that Microsoft is lagging back. No offense meant, though. I mean, Microsoft is still my favorite and I don’t see myself stop using its products both desktop and mobile.
However, lately it seems that Microsoft is trying to mimic Google’s efforts instead of taking the lead. A couple of months after Google launched its branded qwerty cell phone G1 it appears that Microsoft has a similar device on agenda.
It is still a rumor but people who know says that Microsoft is bound to present a new smartphone based on their famous Zune MP3 player. It will be a hybrid of Zune and Danger, latter being the technology that gave birth to Sidekick. It still remains to be seen if Microsoft’s latest effort will be a qwerty cell phone or a touch-screen phone. As the Sidekick is actually a slide-out or kick-out qwerty cell phone, I cannot imagine Microsoft switching from that successful layout.
Anyhow, Microsoft’s secret smartphone will potentially become a fierce competitor to Apple iPhone and Motorola entertainment qwerty cell phones in a very saturated market.
It is possible that the effort will be presented or even officially launched as early as first quarter 2009.
