Nokia N97

Nokia N97

Nokia, the cell phone giant unveiled a new iPhone killer at a recent corporate event held in Barcelona, Spain.

This gadget will join other touch-screen / qwerty cell phones as early as February 2009 and will be retailed for around €550 (approximately $700). It remains unclear which cell phone carrier, if any, will strike a deal with Nokia to offer the latest iPhone killer as a subsidized cell phone. It is possible that Nokia N97 will be available only as an unlocked cell phone. The same happened with HTC S740 and has happened with other expensive mobile phones previously. Anyway, carriers are very keen to offer this new phone to their customers.

So why would you want a Nokia N97? I would personally want it for its eviable memory amount - 32 Gb of built-in memory, expandable to 48 Gb! Yes! At last somebody has heard me - I’ve always said it sucked that BlackBerry and HTC had offered expensive qwerty cell phones with ridiculous 64 or 128 Mb memory. Way to go, Nokia.

Pick this cell phone if you feel like a film director. The 5 Megapixel camera will be capable of taking DVD quality movies. It means you will be able to show your masterpieces on a flat-screen TV without letting others understanding this had been done with a cell phone.

Then you will have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and Nokia Maps support. With Nokia Maps you can also view 3D landmarks - a unique and cool feature of Nokia. Stay always connected and synchronized with the Nokia Ovi network to use different apps and widgets. Nokia N97 sounds like loads of fun, the only drawback being the name. Oh, what is N97, what is 6680? Can you be more creative, Nokia?

So how many iPhone wannabes are there now? We got HTC Touch, Google G1, LG KS360, BlackBerry Storm and now Nokia N97. Majority of the touch-screen gadgets released this year are qwerty cell phones, which iPhone is not! I’ll keep iterating, dynamic people with high requirements who use messaging, e-mail AND Office file editors need a full qwerty keyboard. This is iPhones weakest point. Let’s wait until February 2009 to see if Nokia N97 touch-screen / qwerty phone will manage to squeeze into iPhone’s territory!
