It was announced recently that Samsung would release its first Google Android phone in the Q2 of 2009. The new cell phone is being developed for Sprint and T-Mobile and due to debut on the USA market only.

It is not known whether Samsung is developing two separate versions for Sprint, which is using CDMA standard, and T-Mobile, which is on UMTS. Considering the current financial background, this idea seems not very feasible. Possibly the new Google Android phone will be a cross-standard gadget capable of dealing with different networks.

Design-wise, the new Samsung is expected to be a touch-screen phone that resembles Omnia, Instinct and other classic Samsung phones. It is unlikely that it will be a qwerty cell phone.

Samsung is going really seriously about developing its first Android phone. Large sums of money and extensive human resources are being thrown into the enterprise. At the moment HTC G1 offered by T-Mobile is the only Android based cell phone in USA. There will be more - it is certain that Motorola is looking into Android stuff to see if it is something good. Motorola has employed 50 people to pursue Android applications. Samsung has gone even further by employing an 80-people Android team and even setting a cell phone release deadline.

The fact that T-Mobile wants another Android cell phone suggests that they are happy with the way HTC G1 is performing.
