BlackBerry 8820 Qwerty
BlackBerry qwerty cell phone gained its name when someone thought it looked like a berry with all those seeds (keys). Well, what kind of berry is it then? Quite sweet I would say. Despite of Nokia being the trailblazer of qwerty cell phone culture and despite of HTC working real magic in this market niche, BlackBerry remains the most popular amongst full qwerty keyboard devices, it has its place in the pop-culture and people are starting to refer all similar gadgets to as simply BlackBerry. Let’s try to understand what makes BB the most popular phone?
BlackBerry 8820 was marketed as the real business thing for serious people wearing black suits. Although it worked fine, now the marketers behind BB are worried that they are quickly losing to growing army of geeky-housewifes. I have to say that each BlackBerry qwerty phone is indeed a good tool for a businessman but it is not necessary that you couldn’t enjoy it if you are a “normal” cell phone user.
Memory and OS
This phone has it’s home-made Operational System BlackBerry OS 4.2.2. This can be seen as problem by many but when you start using it, it’s not much of a problem. Of course it is not Windows Mobile but you will learn to live with that.
BlackBerry qwerty cell phone comes with 64 MB of inbuilt memory and can be extend by adding MicroSD cards. You can get a maximum of 8 Gb memory - that’s the maximum memory supported by this device. Not bad?
This cell phone probably has one of the best battery life in all qwerty cell phone world. It can go more than 8 hours in talk-regime with a single charge.
Many business users are used to reading and editing Office documents while on the go. You will have limited possibilities with BlackBerry 8820 qwerty cell phone. To be able to view and edit Word documents you will have to download eOffice.
Multimedia and Socializing
BlackBerry is the queen of Real time instant messaging. If you have had a habbit of chatting, you will probably get really hooked, and if you’ve never ever chatted before in your life, you will start now. The choice is really unbelievable. At your service is: ICQ Instant Messenger, AOL Instant Messanger, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk and the thing called Enhanced Blackberry Messenger. The latter being a system where BlackBerry users can chat with each other hassle-free. Using the convenient (one of the best, in fact) full qwerty keyboard, you’ll be chatting and writing e-mails really fast!
This device comes with a pre-loaded BlackBerry GPS navigation system. You won’t lose your way any more. It can also be upgraded and updated easily. To use GPS navigation, you will usually have to subscribe to a monthly service (it is extra $10 - 30 depending on the network) so check with your provider if you don’t buy an unlocked BlackBerry.
It has a basic video and MP3 player so it will entertain you when its needed. Unfortunately, it won’t replace your MP3 player (as HTC 620 would) because its speaker is too weak and it only has a single (mono) earphone.
Connectivity
You get everything when you go with BlackBerry. It is a quad-band cell phone just like the competitors and supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE. USB cable comes with a wide array of BlackBerry on-board software that makes shifting files between a BB and a PC easy and lets you entertain yourself, too. They have really tried to house everything under one black case - we even get the WAP 2.0 support. Hey, wasn’t that something from the last century? Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is on board as well, so don’t worry.
Cons?
No camera? I couldn’t believe but it is truth. BlackBerry 8820 qwerty cell phone has no in-built camera.
They wanted to be smart and develop their own web browser. What a bad idea. It is nowhere near the Windows Mobile browser or iPhone Safari. Such a shame.
You cannot view all necessary Office documents and you cannot edit them (without installing a third party software).
Bottomline
BlackBerry 8820 is really more of a businessman phone. As it is lacking a digital camera, it is difficult to imagine anyone else using it. However, GPS and instant messaging makes it a very desirable cell phone. In fact, it is really messaging and battery life why you buy BlackBerry 8820.
